Well...I guess it serves in a way to show I'm not talking about something in the abstract.  I actually have flown quite a bit and weather...visibility, esp...was a critical part of flying...or of not flying.

All the pilots I've known...at least the ones still alive*...were extremely reluctant to fly in poor visibility conditions and "vertigo" was the usual reason.

One guy I flew with several times was an ex-WW2 B-17 bomber pilot and had his own helicopter business locally (now retired and in his late 80s he still flies his Stearman bi-plane around the area).  One time we were in his big Bell LongRanger that was equipped with instruments to allow flying in poor visibility...and ol' Herb knew how to use 'em.  I remember sitting in the co-pilot's seat and when entering clouds losing all ability to determine if we were going up, down or sideways...but then there'd be a break in the clouds and the brain did an automatic "reset" each time.

You have to experience vertigo in an aircraft to appreciate it, I guess.

* "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots...but very few old, bold pilots."  I knew three helicopter pilots who are now dead from crashes...and all three were "bold pilots"...sorta like JFKjr, probably.

Thanks for the info.

There were no conspiracy theories...the aircraft broke and the pilot was killed.  End of story.

His attractive widow remarried within 6 months...the bitch. :Pottymouth!:  So this makes you angry because it doesn't fit with your idea of grieving, or the widows loneliness or ability to go on alone?

Nobody accused the new husband of having anything to do with his predessor's untimely demise, gnomesain?

What does this have to do with vertigo or heading straight into the ocean?

Not that I pretend to speak for A.O., but I'd guess he was just inserting his own personal comment which reflects nothing about the facts of the crash.  Then again, I could be wrong.....
