Anybody else subscribe to National Geographic magazine? The current (Feb. 2010) issue's cover story is about the FLDS (Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints...or old style Mormons) and their practice of polygamy. Most of 'em live in a small desert town on the Utah/Arizona line. The article has a photo of an old FLDS 'patriarch' creepo in a cowboy hat who has 5 wives, 46 children and 239 grandchildren. It was an interesting article but it didn't mention what the FLDS calls "bleeding the beast". They see welfare fraud and abuse as a right owed to them by the rest of us (known as 'gentiles' by Mormons) for the mistreatment they suffered (mostly due to their polygamist lifestyles). All but one of a partiarch's plural wives are officially "unmarried mothers" and they and children qualify for lucrative state assistance. Anyway, I sent the following email to NGS. We'll see if they print it in a subsequent issue. To the editor: Maybe the "gawking Gentiles", as the writer called them, are just trying to see what their tax money was spent on at Short Creek aka Colorado City/Hildale. While the article mentioned the effort to be self-sufficient by growing fruits and vegetables, and referred to "large businesses" owned by FLDS members, nothing was said of the real economic base of the FLDS community...and that, allegedly, is large-scale welfare fraud and abuse. Reportedly, FLDS members are adept at keeping state caseworkers (from both AZ & UT) guessing as to actual living arrangements (by temporarily moving back & forth across the state line as necessary) of the many "unmarried mothers" having up to 10 kids...or more...living there. Most FLDS women, as mentioned in the article, can't balance a check book and are thought to hand over their monthly child welfare and assistance checks to the Patriarch. Financial details are hard obtain but it doesn't take a CPA to see the incongruity at Short Creek of an apparent upscale community of 6,000 people living in large houses (and driving new 4x4 pickups and SUVs) way out in the middle of nowhere with no visible means of support. The FLDS call welfare fraud "bleeding the beast". I'm surprised your article made no mention of it. signed, AgentOregon

The welfare state is there to be abused and defrauded, that's why it was invented. The Mormons are simply doing God's work. Mormons are actually a Jewish cult.

The major difference between Mormonism and other religions is that Mormonism was invented about 1830 and many of the tenets & beliefs are demonstrably untrue...such as their idea that American indians are lost Israelites (DNA shows no connection). Other religions have equally preposterous beliefs and foundations but since most of 'em are 2000+ years old now, it is much harder to debunk them. The more one learns about the Mormons, the harder it is to believe anyone could take their line of BS seriously. But millions do. If you ever want to visit a strange land...but one that doesn't require a passport to enter or return...go to Utah. Things are different there.

Well, as a former resident of Las Vegas, Nevada and a current resident of Phoenix, AZ, I don't have to go to Utah to visit a strange land inhabited by Mormorns, I've been surrounded by them since 98. The cartoon is cute, but it's just a tad whack. Never heard the one about the Indians being Jews or the "neutral" Mormons being "punished" by being made black. Fascinating premise for sure.
